the flying razorback

as many of you who know lisa and myself, you know that we "love company"…
by that I simply mean, we love to socialize, converse, and just hang out with our friends and relatives…
we are actually quite good at is as well…

for other people, this can be somewhat nerve racking..
however, lisa and I are extremely laid back and we don't mind if people come over on a moment's notice…
we don't mind as long as you don't mind the possibility of there being children's toys strewn from here to yonder (although the little princess is getting better about picking up after herself)….

in being very "open-armed" with our policy toward guests, you can imagine we have had several over the years….
some who have stayed longer than others….
when living in Dallas, we had my "adopted latino littler brother" who lived with us for a few months while he got things calmed down in his life and got his own apartment….
we also were a safe haven for my true-life little sister while living in Dallas when she really just needed to get away from central arkansas for a while and just unwind….she too stayed for several months…

since moving back to fayetteville, we have once again had those guests who have extended their stay…
lisa's little brother stayed with us for several months while getting his life in order…
also, my brother-in-law stayed with us for a couple of months while finishing up his PhD….

all in all we have had some very wonderful and a wide variety of guests at our home….
however, sometimes the ones we hold most dear are those are only get to stay for brief periods of time….

about 4 years ago, one of those showed up in the form of an old family friend….
james keith gilbert chose to become a member of the Arkansas Razorback baseball team…
and in doing so, displaced himself some 9 hours from home…..we call that place katy, tx…
now, james was an old family friend, because his father grew up in my own home town of dierks, ar…..
also, to make the bond even a little more tighter….
i roomed with his uncle during my college years…..yes, i said his uncle….
see, his uncle ben is only 1 year older than myself….
i don't have time to go through the math for you and that is not what this story is about..

james and I had met a couple of times before but not to the point that we would be playing golf together on weekends or anything…
however, we did have several interests in common, one of which did happen to be golf…
others included baseball (astros for him, braves for me) and the Razorbacks….
this allowed us to quickly develop a friendship and a relationship to the point that I hope he considers me an "older brother" figure…

even if he does consider me that, I can't begin to take credit for the truly humble spirit he has….
lord knows i don't have one of those in me…
but he is honestly, a very down to earth young man and a joy to be around…
he truly cares for others and puts their needs typically in front of his own…
plus my little princess thinks he hung the moon…

an editorial article was released this morning about him as well….
i can't even begin to put in words what james and his entire family means to my family….
we will miss him and we will wish for his visits back to his alma mater…

until then, you can enjoy the article and get a small glimpse into the man that james has become

good luck james and know you will always have a "home" in fayetteville….
