Jun 11

today, apple opened its annual WWDC….

a developer's conference for those of you less informed of the masses…

so, really, lots of things you wouldn't understand or even give a flip about…

however, this geek and several million others around the globe were watching to see what is going down…

the first announcement is the release of the latest apple-only browser for the PC…

that would be safari 3 beta

check it out….

see if you like it…

if you don't, then stick with firefox or heaven forbid internet explorer….

i can't believe people still use THAT browser…

yes, but what does that have to do with the iPhone?

Jun 06

i saw this question on a blog I read called TechCrunch today…

it points out how it doesn't really matter what technological breakthroughs happen this year, after June 29, all anyone is going to talk about is the forthcoming Apple iPhone…

nothing else will matter if you are a geek….

just that one thing… the iphone…

and questions like….

"dude, you have an iphone?"
"when are you getting your iphone?"
"who got their iphone first?"
"what song did you sync to your iphone first?"
"who did you call first on your iphone?"
"what movie did you watch first on your iphone?"
"what website did you browse first on your iphone?"
"how did you convince your wife that $500 for a cell phone was a 'good investment' even with a 1 month old?"

all in all, it will be the most talked about gadget this year….

heck, it already is!

no, I will not fix your computer

May 04

that is the saying on one of my favorite t-shirts of all-time…
it is a simply black t-shirt with white letters stating for all the world to see that you will not fix their computer…
i first saw it when my brother-in-law (PhD in CS) was wearing it….
classic Brian, just classic my friend….

of course, 9 times out of 10, i CAN fix your computer, i just don't want to EVERY time i visit or speak with you….

that leads me to this site where someone who seems to know my life very well, for someone who has never met me….
he sums up 10 reasons it doesn't pay to be the computer guy

very well put I might add…

Greasemonkey and Gmail Macros

Feb 27

ok, so every now and again the techy geek in my comes to the forefront..

well, actually, if you ask my wife, it is at the forefront all of the time….

stores I have been banned from entering on my own w/out her are:

  • Fry's Electronics
  • Best Buy
  • Ultimate Electronics
  • Radio Shack
  • Circuit City
  • ……

I could go on for a while…

anyways, there are always the "free" tech things in my life..
one of which is of course the best web browser on the planet FireFox..

then, there are just numerous amounts of plug-ins for this browser…
the latest one I have found has been a freaking incredible discovery to go along with my "can't-live-without-email" service from Google — GMail
you can sign up for your own free Google Gmail Account as well…

after you have those two things, you HAVE to download this plug-in for Firefox called Greasemonkey..
now that you have installed Greasemonkey you need to get the Gmail Macros Greasemonkey script and install it…

now you are well on your way to email bliss….
on you have Firefox installed, created a GMail account, installed the Greasemonkey plug-in, and the Gmail Macros Greasemonkey script, go to your Gmail inbox and hit the 'h' key for the help screen…

enjoy!

geekdom

Oct 27

ok, so this week, myself and 3 other guys from the office went down to Dallas for the Astricon conference…

now, there are quite a few geeks here….actually, one could argue it is a geek fest..

so that led to several discussions debating the differences mainly between geeks and nerds…

over on cracker's blog there is a thread about this very subject

however, a little bit of homework led me to the following revelations:

according to wikipedia, a nerd is anyone who pursues academic and intellectual interests which could result in the expense of soocial skills….

also according to wikipedia, a geek is anyone who is fascinated, perhaps obesssively, by obscure or very specific areas of knowledge and imagination, usually electronic or virtual in nature…

taking these things into consideration…i would probably be only able to define myself as a nerdy geek…

some day, possibly in the near future, we might also publish one of our new games invented on the way down here in the car on the 5 hour drive….

the name of it was "How much would it take….?"….

interesting one that was….can hardly wait for the ride home tonight…
